SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Days after a 6-month-old boy was found alone and barely responsive in a Springfield hotel room, one family member said the child is to be released into family custody this week.

The child was transported to Doernbecher Hospital in Portland with severe dehydration, malnourishment, and diaper rash. He is expected to make a full recovery.

According to police, the Department of Human Services played a vital role in finding the child in time. They were conducting a welfare check on his 28-year-old mother, who died four days before the two were discovered in the same hotel room.

One family member, who wishes to remain anonymous, claims they requested a welfare check from DHS days prior to Monday, when the check occurred.

At this time, KEZI 9 News has not been able to confirm that with DHS.
